What is Helb Loan?

HELB is an acronym for Higher Education Loans Board operated by the Republic of Kenya. It is a statutory body established in July 1995 by an Act of Parliament ‘Higher Education Loans Board Act’ Cap 213A. It is a state corporation in the Ministry of Education.

The primary aim of the board is to provide sustainable finance as loans to Kenyans pursuing Higher Education within and outside the country through mobilization and prudent management of resources.

HELB also helps the government in recovering all matured loans and also ensures sufficient funds are raised to meet the rising loan demand and attain a faster turnaround in loan repayments.

Helb consists of three major tiers and they include;

  • Undergraduate section: This deals with the recovery of undergraduate loans
  • Jielimishe Loan section: This section is charged with the responsibility of disbursing and recovering loans from salaried students.
  • Allocation section: This unit is charged with the responsibility of collecting and updates of loanees’ accounts.

As a Kenyan student who wishes to apply for the Helb loan, you can do so by accessing the students portal, completing the short registration form which will help you generate your login details for future access to the portal.

Once successfully registered, you can login and access the HELB loan application form which you can complete if you really wish to apply for the loan.

If you applied for the loan, you can always check your status online via the student portal. It is important to note that only students who have previously applied for a loan can see their current loan status when they click on the get statement option. If you are yet to apply for a loan, click on loan application under the Helb menu on your portal to start the loan application process now.

Helb offers its beneficiaries both home and abroad multiple options to repay their loan and beneficiaries can always take advantage of any of the options that is more convenient for them. See the list of options below;

Local Repayment Method

  • Mobile Payment Services: M-PESA: Beneficiaries can use the M-PESA (Safaricom) Money Transfer option to repay their loans by following these steps
  • Select pay bill option
  • Enter HELB business number as 200800
  • Enter your national ID number as your account number
  • Enter the amount you want to pay
  • Enter your secret PIN number
  • Confirm the transaction and send

Note: The transaction reflects in your statement immediately after the transaction.

Using M-PESA (Safaricom) Money Transfer for Employers

  • Upload the remittance schedule
  • Generate the E-Slip
  • Go to the M-PESA menu and click on Lipa na M-PESA, then Paybill
  • Enter 200800 as the business number
  • For the account details, enter the generated E-Slip number as the account number
  • Enter your PIN number
  • You will receive a confirmation message for payment

Note: The transaction will reflect in the employer statement and posted to individual loanee statements.

Credit / Debit Card Repayment Method

You can authorize HELB to make monthly debits directly from your bank account or credit card. To use this option, you just have to sign the CREDIT CARD AUTHORIZATION FORM (CCA) and forward the same to HELB. VISA branded credit cards or debit (ATM) cards can also be swiped at HELB offices.

Diaspora Repayment Methods

Beneficiaries in the diaspora can repay their loans using SendWave or WorldRemit. You can also pay directly through the Helb loan portal using your ATM card. To use this method, simply follow these steps;

  • Create an account with HELB online portal if you don’t have one already, if you do, just log in and continue.
  • Once successfully logged in, click on Online Services then select the Online Payment menu.
  • Enter your National ID number as your account number
  • Enter the amount you wish to pay and click Pay Now
  • A payment acknowledgment will be issued once the payment is successful HELB will issue you an official receipt for the payment.

Helb Loan Waiver

Helb has recently announced a penalty waiver for matured loans that are yet to be paid. This waiver came as a result of the consideration of debtors on the grounds of the impact of covid-19 on the economy of the country and on citizens at large.

Waiver of penalty started on the 1st of March and will end by 30th April 2022. The total waived amount is 100% although some profiles have been seen having a waiver of 80%.

All beneficiaries who have penalties to pay are advised to pay up before the deadline stated above. You can follow these steps below to process your payment now;

  • Access the HELB portal using the link https://studentportal.helb.co.ke/auth/signin
  • Login if your account is already registered.
  • Register if you have no existing account
  • Once logged in Click on services then under Penalty waiver click on Get Waiver
  • The system will process your request and feedback displayed depending on loan balances
  • Click on Print waiver request and a sample PDF will be generated as attached.

Note: The waived percentage on your profile may continue to reduce if you keep waiting before making the payment hence, it is very important you pay up as soon as possible to avoid incurring more debt.
