About Walter Sisulu University
Founded on 1 July 2005, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) was established in terms of the Higher Education Act No. 101 of 1997 of South Africa, as amended. The university was named in honor of an icon of the South African liberation struggle, the late Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu who was a close comrade of Nelson Mandela.
WSU is uniquely positioned to play a powerful role in the national government’s new focus on rural development in particular.
Walter Sisulu University has opened its applications for the 2023 academic year. WSU accepts online applications which require zero fees to complete and all prospective students can submit their applications to be considered for admission.

WSU Admission Requirements
Interested and eligible prospective students are to submit the following documents:
For new applicants, the university considers various post-matric certificates for admission purposes.
The following certificates are accepted:
- The “Old Senior” certificate
- The National Senior Certificate “NSC”
- National Certificate Vocational “NCV”
- N6 certificate
- Current grade 12 learners must upload grade 11 final results and first quarter or mid-year results if available.
- Post-matric candidates must upload a matric or equivalent certificate, academic record, copy of ID, or passport.
Some departments may consider mature age exemption for admission into some programs. For further information or enquires, contact the Admissions Office at [email protected].
Transfer students
Students who wish to come on transfer into the university from another tertiary institution may apply and submit the following documents:
- Matric Certificate
- Post-matric certificate;
- Identity document;
- Official academic report;
- Conduct certificate

How to Apply for Admission into Walter Sisulu University as an International Student
If you wish to submit your application form online as an international student, kindly follow these steps;
- First, apply to Universities South Africa (Usaf) for evaluation of school results or other degree/diploma certificates.
- Wait till you receive the results from Usaf(this may take a week or two depending on the number of applicants)
- After receipt of the response, you may commence with the application process and upload the results and a copy of your international passport.
